Casanuova di Nittardi 2017 Chianti Classico, except for being a top-notch Chianti, is a very special wine as its label is created by the great Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. 2017 vintage has already received some excellent reviews (93pts from James Suckling), but what makes it absolutely collectible and deeply emotional is its label and wrap!
Fattoria Nittardi has a long history dating back to the 16th century when it was in the hands of Michelangelo Buonarroti. While Michelangelo was painting Cappella Sistina he came close to the Pope and thus he was sending him wines every year. This is a tradition that continues until today, and the wines of each year are first presented to the Pope.
In 1982, the winery passed into the hands of Peter Femfert and his wife, Stefania Canali. Peter and Stefania decided to pay tribute to Michelangelo so every year, the label of Casanuova di Nittardi is designed by an artist. This vintage is the year of Mikis Theodorakis. The label he designed depicts a melody while the wrap has imprinted the cosmic map of his creative universe.
The content of the bottle is 100% Sangiovese from the vineyard Vigna Doghessa. The wine ages for 14 months in old French oak barrels (only 10% of them are new). After, it's bottled and aged for a few months in the bottle, remaining in the cellar of the winery.
