Forgotten, awesome bottles!

Why do we love it?

They are the producers who with their wines have changed the terms of quality and value, at least for us. So, when they inform you that they discovered 200 forgotten (literally) bottles of Athiri Oaked 2015, an experimental wine that they did a few years ago, and that now it is awesome, you should take their word for it. Because probably there is great chance that you will miss something amazing and because if there is someone who doesn’t talk big about their wines, this would be the Bougiouris brothers.

Let's take things from scratch. In a single vineyard on the slopes of Kitheronas at an altitude of 350 m, several years ago they decided to plant Athiri. They used it in a blend with Assyrtiko, with the results being excellent. In 2015, they had the idea of trying a single-varietal Athiri. And since they did it, they decided to have a minimum quantity oaked, just to see what would happen. To be exact, they used a single French oak barrel of third use, with moderate burning. Athiri remained there for 6 months. It was bottled and then left to rest. We tried it then and it was clear that it would evolve great with time. They let it be. And they forgot about it.

A few days ago, 1.5 years later, the phone rang. And one of the forgotten bottles was in our hands in a few hours. Athiri Oaked 2015 from Mpougiouris Estate is a white wine that made us ecstatic. Bound with incredible complexity and balance, it has been transformed into the next wine that will seduce you! The experiment was a big success

Tastes Like

Deep gold color in the glass.

Impressive nose with high aromatic intensity which predisposes pleasantly for what will follow. Mellow peach, dried banana, orange jam, bitter orange and apricot are beautifully blended with vanilla, butter and toasted bread. The aromatic bouquet is complemented by sweet aromas of honeycomb, honey and roasted nuts.

Medium-volume mouth with refreshing acidity and amazing intensity that may catch you off-guard. Oral aromas of sweet lemon, apricot, bitter orange and grapefruit appear in the beginning, followed by vanilla, peanut butter, hazelnut, honey and toasted bread. The deliciously intense aftertaste leaves a sense of citrus on the palate that lasts.

ATHIRI OAKED 2015 - MPOUGIOURIS ESTATE

PAIR IT

Pair with chicken in the oven with potatoes, pasta with carbonara sauce, smoked pork steak with honey or grilled squid

Stuffed chicken roll with quince and potatoes in the oven

  • 1 stuffed chicken roll
  • 1kg potatoes cut into small pieces
  • 500 gr quince cut into thick slices
  • 2 lemons (juice and zest)
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tbsps. Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp. curry powder
  • 1 tbsp. fresh oregano
  • 1 tbsp. fresh thyme
  • 1/2 cup of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • 600 ml of vegetable stock

Preheat the oven to 250 ° C. Add the olive oil to the casserole, then the chicken roll, the cut quince and the potatoes.

Mix the remaining ingredients with a small portion of the stock and pour the mixture on the roll and potatoes. Add stock so that the mixture covers the potatoes.

Cover the casserole and, after lowering the oven to 150 ° C, put it in the oven. From time to time we open the casserole and check whether we need to add some water.

Once ready, uncover the casserole and raise the oven temperature. Leave it there until it's golden brown.
