The hidden side of Mykonos

We liked this wine because it impressed us. We have tasted White Potamisi before and we did not like it that much, so we started a bit negatively biased. Yiorgos Xydakis' s White Potamisi, however, impressed us so much with its complexity, balance and good structure that cut down every bias.

Giorgos Xydakis, a dentist in the profession, tasted, for the first time, a sweet wine from sun-dried Kountoura grapes, in 1966, from his winegrower grandfather. That was enough for him to fall in love with wine and local grape varieties. Xydakis microwinery was founded in 2001 and it included an old vineyard with Cycladic grape varieties with which he engaged as an amateur, and bottled wines for friends and wine connoisseurs. His philosophy is grounded in wines from old vines, mainly from Mykonos but from the surrounding islands too, with minimal interventions and indigenous yeasts.

White Potamisi 2017 is no exception. 1/3 of the wine ferments in oak barrel whereas the other 2/3 in a stainless steel tank and both mature for 7 months. Then, it is bottled unfiltered, capturing in it the exuberant aromas and flavors that reminisce of a Cycladic island. As you can imagine, we are talking about minimal bottles (just 400!!) which are usually monopolized by restaurateurs and collectors in the blink of an eye. Fortunately, we have provided for some bottles ... but they are very few so hurry!

Tastes Like

It has medium gold color.

Nose initially shy, that is unfolding gradually ... Aromas of bergamot, ripe apricot, honey, butter, kumquats, quince and vanilla are complemented by mineral, salty flavors.

On the palate, it seduces with its tight structure and its full body. Oily feeling and crisp acidity, perfectly balanced. Honey, orange, toast, peach, lemon, grapefruit, butter, fresh apricot and mineral notes expressed as wet stone and flint, create a complex and delicious whole. Buttery aftertaste that lasts.
