The Malagouzia definitely loves northern Greece. There, it gives bodied wines, with buttery feel and aperitif character. Hailing from Etoloakarnania, the Malagouzia might have reached the verge of extinction but now has returned for good. Already it is at the top of consumer preferences in Greece and still rising steadily in the export sector.
We have it in our mind as a synonymous of fresh flowers and fruity aromas. But what happens with time? Is it a wine that lasts? Is it one of those that improve or even evolve nicely over time?
Hmm, let’s think for a minute... Try Malagouzia 2014 Domaine Kamara and you will understand!
Domaine Kamara of the Kioutsoukis family got into organic farming from the beginning. At Melissochori Thessaloniki the estate vineyards have ideal conditions for the cultivation of Malagousia. Sloping sandy clay soils with excellent drainage and semi-continental climate with cold snowy winters but no signs of the dangerous spring frosts. Organic farming and the attention of the producer ensures low yields which significantly contribute to the concentration of the fruit and the best expression of its features.
As for aging? The fruits are there! The honey-like character of the variety has matured and is now expressed in the form of honeycomb. The mouth has evolved nicely gaining complexity and duration.
We tried it, we loved it and we got several bottles home. You may have to think again about Malagousia.
