The Gaja Ca’Marcanda Magari 2018 beautifully showcases the potential of international varieties in Tuscany. It reflects Angelo Gaja’s signature ability to combine power with finesse, earning 94 points from Robert Parker and Vinous, as well as an impressive 95 points from Jeb Dunnuck.
After establishing his reputation in Piemonte, Angelo Gaja turned his attention to Tuscany, exploring the region through his Ca’ Marcanda estate in Bolgheri. The project was created to express the character of the Tuscan terroir through international grape varieties. The 2018 blend consists of 60% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. Each variety is vinified separately before the final blend is aged in French oak for around 12 months, followed by further bottle ageing.
The 2018 vintage has a particularly elegant character and is now at a wonderful stage of its evolution, combining refined fruit, structure and finesse. That said, there is no need to rush — it has the structure to develop beautifully for at least another decade.
