Château Haut-Brion - The Winery

The Haut-Brion winery is the jewel of Pessac Leognan village, on the left bank of Bordeaux, and Graves's only first growth. Haut Brion is one of Bordeaux's oldest wineries. It was founded in 1530 by the Pontac family. There are relics that prove that Haut Brion wines were enjoyed by famous and prominent personalities such as King Charles II and Thomas Jefferson. In the famous 1855 classification, Haut-Brion was classified as Premier Cru (First Growth) along with Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Latour, and Château Margaux. These 5 chateaux are the most iconic wineries in both France and the world. Every year the prices and demand for Haut-Brion wines are off the chart and for this reason collectors try to buy them en primeur before they are even bottled.

Château Haut-Brion 2014 - The Wine

When the lowest score is 95pts from Decanter and even from a barrel sample (without the wine being ready) and the highest hits 100pts from Wine Enthusiast you understand that things are very serious. The above astronomical ratings for the exceptional vintage of 2014 made this wine quickly collectible and really hard to find.

The style of the red Haut-Brion differs from the rest of the right bank. It has more Merlot while the rest have more Cabernet Sauvignon. As a result, Haut-Brion is more ethereal, richer, rounder and fruitier. Finally, it is worth noting that by law it has the lowest acreage yield of all the first growths. So you can imagine the dense concentration...

The wine is fermented at controlled, high temperatures and then aged in French oak barrels (70% new) for 20-24 months. It is bottled in an elegant bottle and intended for long aging and a unique mystical experience.

Tastes Like
“Full of ripe fruit, rich and concentrated, this is a wonderful and impressive wine. It has beautiful, sharp acidity perfectly balanced with ripe fruits. This is one of those wines that will age beautifully for many years. Drink from 2024.” Wine Enthusiast

“Beautifully perfumed with rose petals, violets, and currant bush. Full body, very silky tannins, and bright acidity. Tannins are super fine-grained. Goes on for minutes. Racy and refined. Persistent.” James Suckling

“The flagship 2014 Haut-Brion is a beauty that packs more flavor, intensity, and depth than just about every other wine in the vintage. With full-bodied richness, a plump, layered texture, sweet tannin, and a great finish, it’s a gem in the vintage that can be enjoyed anytime over the coming two to three decades.” Jeb Dunnuck

“The 2014 Haut Brion is a blend of 50% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 39% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 11 September and 10 October, cropped at 42.9 hectoliters per hectare and raised in 70% new oak. The Haut-Brion exudes more red fruit than La Mission Haut-Brion, adorned with wild strawberry, bilberry, tobacco, and again, just that hint of menthol in the background.” Robert Parker
