Château Mouton Rothschild – The Winery
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most important and iconic wineries in the world. However, it wasn’t always classified as a First Growth in Bordeaux. In the original 1855 classification, it was ranked as Second Growth. After more than 100 years without any changes, everyone thought it was set in stone—everyone except the Baron. Château Mouton Rothschild is the only winery in the world that managed to change the incredibly rigid 1855 classification and officially become “Premier Cru Classé” (First Growth Estate), joining the elite of Bordeaux and France. It claimed the position it deserved in the most triumphant way, breaking tradition and sending shockwaves through the wine world.
Since 1973, every Château Mouton Rothschild label proudly bears the phrase:
“Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change.”
(First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change.)
This is Château Mouton Rothschild—not just a winery or a wine, but a piece of history and a cornerstone of Bordeaux for decades.
Château Mouton Rothschild 2020 – The Wine
Let’s start with the fact that it scored 100/100 from James Suckling, Decanter, and Wine Advocate!
Secondly, Château Mouton Rothschild has the most spectacular style among all First Growth Estates. With notes of Asian spices, rich texture, exotic personality, and the ability to age and evolve for decades, Château Mouton Rothschild is not only one of Bordeaux’s best wines—it’s one of the greatest wines in the world.
As for the label, the tradition of featuring artwork by renowned artists began in 1945. The debut label was perfect for its time: the Baron chose an image symbolizing France’s liberation, with the famous “V” for Victory. From that point on, every label has been based on an original artwork created specifically for this purpose by famous artists such as Salvador Dalí, Miró, Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Warhol, Bacon, Balthus, Tàpies, David Hockney, and many others who contributed to this tradition.
The 2020 label was designed by Peter Doig, who drew inspiration from French painters Jean-François Millet and Vincent van Gogh. Doig described the work as a “dreamlike landscape” and called it “a tribute to the people who work in the vineyard and harvest the grapes,” adding that of all the labels he had seen, “none really referred to this aspect of wine production.”
It’s worth noting that this tradition of unique annual labels has been adopted by many wineries worldwide—because everyone tries, in their own way, to emulate the iconic Château Mouton Rothschild.
