Château Mouton Rothschild - The Winery
Chateau Mouton Rothschild is one of the most important and iconic wineries in the world. However, it did not always belong to Bordeaux's first growth since it was considered a Second Growth when the Classification took place in 1855. After existing for over 100 years without a single change, nobody believed the Classification would ever change.
Nobody except the Baron. Château Mouton Rothschild is the ONLY winery in the world to succeed in changing the incredibly irrevocable classification of 1855 and officially become "Premier Cru Classé" (first growth estate), among the top wineries of Bordeaux and France. So, it officially took the place it always deserved, and in the most glorious way, breaking every status quo and causing chills throughout the wine world.
Since 1973, the front label on every bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild boasted…
“Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change”.
First I am, second I was, I Mouton do not change.
This is the Mouton Rotchschild, not just a winery or a wine but a piece of history and a key pillar of Bordeaux for decades.
Château Mouton Rothschild 2014 - The Wine
First, let us tell you that it got 99/100 from James Suckling.
Secondly, Château Mouton Rothschild has the most spectacular wine style of all first growth estates. With notes of Asian spices, rich texture, exotic personality and the ability to age and evolve for decades, Château Mouton Rothschild is not only one of the finest Bordeaux wines, but also one of the greatest wines in the world.
The debut label was perfect for the times and the wine. The image The Baron chose was a symbol celebrating the Liberation of France. With the famous “V” for Victory label, a tradition was born! From that point on, each label vintage was based on an original work of art created specifically for this purpose by famous artists: Salvador Dali, Miro, Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Warhol, Bacon, Balthus, Tàpies, David Hockney and a myriad of famous artists have contributed to this tradition.
David Hockney edited the label of Château Mouton Rothschild 2014. Hockney, that was a close friend of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, paid tribute to her by using the words "Dedicated to Philippine" above and below the image of Two glasses of wine.
One glass is full and the other empty. The work of art symbolizes the "constant miracle of the birth of a great wine".
It is worth noting that this tradition with a different label each year has been followed by many wineries around the world, because everyone is trying to look like the iconic Château Mouton Rothschild, in every way he can.
