Well, this 2021 Moscatel is here to impress us with its complex, botanical and tropical character and of course with its gastronomic aspect. It’s an incredible wine, a tribute to the traditional winemaking methods of Nicola Catena’s ancestors, and with 90 points from Tim Atkin MW!
The history of Catena Zapata, a renowned winery, can be traced back to 1898 when Nicola Catena, a visionary from Le Marche, Italy, made a move to Mendoza, Argentina. With ambitious plans for both Argentina and its wine industry, Catena established Catena Zapata in 1902.
What set Catena Zapata apart was his unique approach to highlighting the terroir and the significance of vineyards situated at high altitudes, nestled in the foothills of the Andes. Through his observations, Catena discovered that the average temperature and environmental conditions in these regions played a pivotal role in the exceptional ripening of grapes. This process resulted in the preservation of high acidity and the development of an intense and complex aromatic profile.
Catena Zapata’s La Marchigiana Moscatel 2021 is a perfect blend of two different worlds: the traditional manual harvest and the natural winemaking of Marche, with the special fermentation method applied in Cuyo, Argentina, in clay pots. The juice from Moscatel grapes, from the Finca Los Paraísos vineyard, was fermented in clay pots, with the skins, for 21 days and matured there for another 8 months before being bottled, with zero added sulfites. The result? A wine with impressive aromatic richness, juicy stone fruit and the ultimate proof that Moscatel can age when made properly, even if it does not contain any added sulfites!
