Why do we love it?

Bodegas Ponce Depaula Monastrell 2020 is the wine that will open new horizons for you, as it goes beyond the limits of the variety and offers an astonishing quality‑to‑price ratio! Robert Parker agrees, awarding every new vintage 93–94 points — and for 2023 in particular, he scored it 93 points!

After training alongside the legendary Telmo Rodriguez, Juan Antonio Ponce returned to his hometown, Manchuela, to take over the family winery. He focused exclusively on local grape varieties such as Bobal and Monastrell, breathing new life into the region, which is now beginning to attract the attention of critics and wine lovers following the excellent scores his wines have received.

Bodegas Ponce Depaula Monastrell 2020 is a single-varietal red wine from 30–60-year-old vineyards. It ferments in 4,500L wooden vats and then matures for 7 months in 15,000L wooden vats. A wine that breaks conventions and can ultimately impress you with its distinctive character!

Will you be able to resist it? We certainly won’t!

Tastes Like

On the nose, aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum, and Mediterranean herbs dominate, while leather hints appear in the background.
On the palate, it is juicy, with medium body, fine grained tannins and balanced acidity. The ripe black fruits intertwine with herbs and a hint of tea.

Pair it with oven baked butter beans or pasta amatriciana.

Bodegas Ponce

Manchuela is a lesser-known Spanish region inland Valencia, where the Bobal variety works wonders. There may be a few defenders in this area and even fewer winemakers dedicated to the Bobal variety,
but Juan Antonio Ponce is certainly the leader, and his wines synonymous with the expressions of this rare variety.
Juan Antonio Ponce was Telmo Rodriguez's right-hand man for 5 years and started his winery in 2005, at the age of 23. Biodynamic cultivation in the vineyard and winery a natural approach, using low levels of sulfur dioxide. Its philosophy is to produce natural wines, with wild pastries, to respect the local Bobal variety, and to express its terroir.

PAIR IT

Pair it with oven baked butter beans or pasta amatriciana.

Οctopus with tubetti half pasta in the oven.

1 big octopus
250 gr. tubetti half pasta
1 big onion
1 teaspoon tomato paste
150 gr. tomato sauce or concasse tomato
50 ml. cognac
1 teaspoon of sugar
2 bay leaves                                                                                            3-4 grains of all spice
1 small cinnamon stick
Freshly ground pepper
Salt
Olive oil
1.100 ml. hot vegetable or seafood broth or water

In a saucepan, put the octopus, with a bay leaf, to braise over low heat. The octopus will release its liquids, especially if it is frozen, to boil but if necessary add a little hot water. When it is softened and red, remove it from the fire and cut it into small pieces.

Chop the onion and saute it to 50 ml. olive oil along with the octopus, for 3-4 minutes. Then, put in the cognac, add the spices and the other bay leaf. Add the tomato paste, sugar, tomatoes or sauce and a cup of broth or water. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

Transfer to a moderate baking dish, add the remaining hot broth or water, 50 ml. olive oil and stir. Taste it and add salt if necessary.
Bake in a well preheated oven at 175 ° C for about 25 minutes or until the pasta is cooked, stirring regularly.

Serve the pasta with the octopus hot as soon as it comes out of the oven!
