Why do we love it?

Roquette & Cazes is full of intensity, aromatic finesse, and tremendous structure! It is also the epitome of the Douro and Bordeaux connection. We loved it because it has the best characteristics of both in perfect balance!

The story of Roquette & Cazes began with two families who shared a common vision and passion for wine. It all started in 2002 when Jorge Roquette from the Quinta do Crasto winery located on the right bank of the Douro River. Jean-Michel Cazes from Château Lynch-Bages, located in Pauillac in Bordeaux, set out on an ambitious project: to create great wines that combine the dynamism and soul of the Douro, with the elegance and know-how of Bordeaux. The first wine they made was Xisto – Roquette Cazes in 2003, which immediately made a splash, while in its footsteps, the second brainchild of the winery, Roquette & Cazes, followed. To date, it has had 16 vintages and its success is striking every year.

Roquette & Cazes 2021 comes from 60% Touriga Nacional and 25% Touriga Franca, which combine rich aromatic character with finesse, while 15% Tinta Roriz (the well-known Tempranillo) comes to give structure and complexity. After the manual harvest, the grapes are gently crushed, which are then transferred for fermentation in stainless steel conical tanks. There, techniques are applied according to French standards (including délestage), to improve the texture of the wine. Its 18-month stay in French oak barrels softens the edges and adds finesse.

Roquette & Cazes 2021 is a concentrated, complex wine with a very elegant character that has been made so that you can, as soon as it reaches your hands, enjoy it without having to wait! But if you do, it will reward you with even more complexity and character. Try it!

In the glass, it is a deep ruby. The fruit dominates with fresh red fruits, mainly strawberry, red berry, red cherry, and cranberry followed by notes of sweet spices such as cinnamon and anise. Vanilla and violet give additional aromatic intensity.

In the glass, it is exuberant, with velvety tannins and a very good balance of acidity and alcohol. Red and black cherry, raspberry, black currant, plum, tobacco, cinnamon, vanilla, and very subtle leather notes, in a complex and very tasty result.

ROQUETTE & CAZES 2021 - QUINTA DO CRASTO

PAIR IT

with meat dishes, game, spaghetti Bolognese, or grilled lamb chops

Beef stew with red wine

  • 1 kg of boneless beef cut into bits
  • 4 tbsps. flour
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 2 tbsps. olive oil
  • 1 cup of dry red wine
  • 1 cube beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp. dry thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 pack of small fresh mushrooms, whole
  • baby carrots
  • salt
  • pepper

Wipe the meat with kitchen paper to absorb excess moisture. Stir in a bowl 3 tablespoons of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, paprika and pepper and sprinkle the meat with the flour mixture.

Sautee the meat in hot olive oil in moderate to strong heat, stirring frequently,  for 4-6 minutes or until it acquires a golden brown color. Remove the meat from the pot. Add the red wine, stirring well to incorporate with the meat residues from the bottom of the pot.

Put the meat back in the pot and add the broth, thyme, bay leaf, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Once it starts boiling, cover the pot, lower the heat in half and allow the meat to cook for about an hour, stirring occasionally. You can accompany your meat with wild rice.
