Why do we love it?

It has been a long since we were thrilled about a Syrah!

The Syrah 2014 Domaine Florian, can take any comparison to the best Greek Syrahs you have tried so far. It is one of those that will make whoever tries it to ask "where did you say this wine is from? " You will tell them Trilofo Thessaloiki although the grapes come from Trilofo Naoussa. And because they will surely ask who produces it, somewhere the story of Gerd begins.

Born and raised in his grandfather’s winery in Rhineland Palatinate, the paradise of Riesling and Muskats (they make great reds as well...).

He made his first steps in the vineyard. His grandfather insisted on traditional viticulture and completely natural wines, avoiding even using the tractor as he considered that the weight would affect the soil and the exhaust fumes would contaminate the fruit and would alter the wine.

Growing up, the paths of Gerd and vine were separated. He became a citizen of the world and worked for big multinational companies in Luxembourg, the United States and elsewhere. In 2002 he came to Greece. As a counterbalance to bureaucratic work, in 2004 he bought a few acres in Trilofon and planted the first vines. Initially he experimented vinifying for personal consumption with the results to exciting anyone trying it.

Right from the start he emphasized on organic farming, the proper management of the vineyard and the production of healthy fruit with minimal intervention. Endorsing the principles of his grandfather, all work was done by hand. His children, grew in the vineyard. Given their love for it, in 2010 his son Florian decided to study oenology at the University of Vienna. It was then that Gerd started taking things more seriously. He built the boutique winery in Trilofos Thessaloniki and extended vineyard to reach today 18,5 acres. Listening to them both speak (in Greek) about their vineyards and wines, it is impossible not to be seduced  by their passion. And you will understand that they mean every word when the time comes to try.

For Syrah Domaine Florian they chose a small vineyard with southeast orientation near Naoussa, at an altitude of 500 meters. They followed strictly organic and biodynamic farming with exploitation of the region's favorable conditions to produce healthy fruit. Without pressure, the precious juice collected, aged for 18 months in moderate burning oak barrels from the forests of Rodopi.

The Syrah 2014 Domaine Florian is one of the red wines that will charm you with its finesse. Although you will worship it now, with every sip you will regret not aging it further for ten more years. Because you know that wine needs patience, and maybe some day you will get patient enough to wait ...
