TOURIGA NACIONAL 2011 – GEORGE KITOS

George Kitos's love for the exotic varieties is well known. Cultivating Touriga Naciontal, the emblematic portuguese variety in the Thessalonian plain was a great bet. After the successful experimental cultivation of classical french varieties at the area Sotirio, Larisa, the daring agriculturist turned to less known and exotic varieties, defying the lack of altitude and mountain slopes.

Touriga Nacional was historically the dominant variety of the Dao area from where it probabl comes from. It is considered the best red variety of Portugal and it is responsible for some of the greatest wines of the Douro area.

Insisting in producing only a bottle per plant and almost without any intervention, not only during cultivation but during fermentation as well, George Kitos aims to the maximum condensation and output of the varietal characteristics.

Touriga Nacional 2011 by Domain George Kitos, after staying for 6 months in american oak barrels, is  an exceptionaly complicated and rich red wine that promises excitement.

Do not hesitate to mature it for 5 more years. 

In the glass, its colour is dark red with burgundy highlights.

In the nose, violet is dominant combined beautifully with ripe berry, plum and gooseberry. Vanilla, cress, chocolate, coffee, ink and herbal tea allusions complete impressively the complex bouquet.

In the mouth, it has a well – sized body with beautifully intergrated tannins and perfectly balanced acidity. Violet is enhanced in the mouth in a spicy bachground while the aftertaste leaves a sense of dried nuts which lingers.
