Why do we love it?

Continuing the thousand–year viticultural and wine tradition, Father Epifanios leads the group of monks of Mylopotamos, the biggest glebe of the holy Monastery Agia Lavra in Agio Oros, in their effort to revive the historic vineyard of the area. Along with father Ioakeim and with the initial help of John Boutaris and John Vogiatzis, they planted the first grapevines of the new vineyard in 1993.

The vineyard is extended on the slope next to the sea, favoured by the sea breeze and the ideal oriantation which grants plenty of sunshine. There they grow with biological methods the red varieties of Limnio, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot which meet in a red wine that combines both tradition and modern vinification technics under the supervision of the experienced oenologist Andreas Matamis.

Mylopotamos Red 2011 is a biological red wine that impresses not only with its history and origin but with its aromas and flavours as well.

Enjoy it now or mature it for 5 more years.

Tastes Like

In the glass, its colour is bright ruby – red.

In the nose, rich aromas of cherry, bitter cherry and blackberry steal the show accompanied by sweet rose aroma. Cinammon and clove add a spicy character while wet soil, oak and chocolate hints complete the complex total.

In the mouth the body is of good size with intensity that is supported by the noticeable acidity and the rounded  medium strength tannins. Blackberry and cherry dominate with spicy pepper notes and wood sense. At the end, the long – lasting aftertaste leaves a characteristic sense of dried nuts in the mouth.

MYLOPOTAMOS RED 2011 – MYLOPOTAMOS

PAIR IT

Combine it with meat on the barbecue, pungent fillet or yellow cheese .

Pork chops with tomato jam and crispy leek

  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil and 6 extra tablespoons (for leek)
  • 1 fresh onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 4 ripe tomatoes finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of mirin (or white wine vinegar and 1 tablespoon of sugar)
  • 4 pork chops (about 2 cm thick)
  • salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1 leek (white part only) well washed

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Heat 1/4 cup olive oil in a pan. Add the onion and the garlic and cook until they become transparent, about 3 minutes.

Add tomatoes and mirin (or vinegar and 1 tablespoon of sugar). Boil while stirring to moderate heat, until the mixture becomes almost dry or about 15 minutes.

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pan. Season the steaks with salt and pepper. Sauté until they get a nice golden-brown color, about 1.5 minutes on each side. Transfer them to a baking pan and roast them for about 5 minutes in the preheated oven.

Add the remaining 4 tablespoons of olive oil to the pan. Chop the white part of the leek. Add the leeks to the hot olive oil and fry until crisp.
