If there is one word describing the Giannopoulos Vineyards, this is "New". New people, new ideas, a new winery, new wines. There is no history lost in time. It all started with Christos, Vangelis's father, in 1993 was devoted to viticulture, leaving the olives. Gradually the vineyard grows. His son Evangelos Giannopoulos, oenologist and winemaker, takes over in 2012 and brings the winery to a new level.
The vineyards lie in the heart of Laconia, in the district of Potamia Sparta, and at the foot of Taygetos. The different composition of the soil and the particular weather conditions add interest and complexity, while the catalytic involvement of the Gerakaris river crossing and demarcating the area, soften the extreme winter cold.
Kydonitsa was a major bet. A variety which was almost extinct for years but managed to survive and establish itself in the region thanks to the persistent efforts of Laconians winemakers. According to the famous grape geneticist and author Jose Vouillamoz, the Kydonitsa is one of the varieties that stand out and have all the qualities to become emblematic and dominate the world wine map in the future.
Crisp acidity, aromas, and flavors of quince (hence the name) make it special.
Cultivated perfectly in its native environment, in one of the very few varietal vinifications, Kydonitsa 2022 by Giannopoulos Vineyards, is an amazing example of the variety’s possibilities.
Evangelos Giannopoulos, although still young, has his name printed on one of the best versions of a variety that is bound to stand out!
