Malbec Argentino Catena Zapata is a wine that captures everyone's attention the moment it is placed on the table, thanks to one of the most beautiful labels ever featured on a bottle. Malbec Argentino Catena Zapata is a tribute to the history of the variety and to the role of the Catena family in elevating Argentinian wine to worldwide acclaim, with the label depicting that very story (the four women who played a pivotal role in shaping the destiny of the variety, including Madame Phylloxera). Naturally, the wine inside is every bit as astonishing, and once you taste it, you'll immediately understand why the 2022 vintage was awarded 98 points by James Suckling!
There is little that needs to be said about the Catena family. From 1902, when Nicola Catena planted his first vineyards in Mendoza, to his grandson Nicolás Catena, who is considered the man who redefined Argentinian wine by investing in high-altitude vineyards at the foothills of the Andes, and to Dr. Laura Catena, founder of the Catena Wine Institute. It is easy to see that the history of the winery is inseparably intertwined with the history of Argentinian wine.
The grapes for Malbec Argentino Catena Zapata come from two of the family's most important vineyards, the nearly century-old Angelica (920m elevation) and the younger Nicasia (1,095m elevation). Following rigorous selection, the juice ferments with indigenous yeasts and a proportion of whole clusters. The wine is then aged in oak foudres and concrete vats for 15-18 months. The result is a magnificent wine that bears Argentina's signature, the character of the variety, and the experience of the Catena family. Every minute it spends in your glass, it transforms and impresses, and spoiler alert: it will continue to do so for many years to come.
A unique wine that returns the variety to where it belongs, to the sky, as the Catenas say!
