Why do we love it?

There are wines, and then there is Barolo Pira 2020 by Roagna — something altogether more profound, above all a hymn to elegance and tradition. A tradition which, through Luca Roagna’s eyes, has become strikingly contemporary and deeply seductive. Barolo Pira weaves its fragile, delicate elements — fresh red fruit, flowers and herbs — into a velvety framework of finely sculpted tannins. In this way, Luca creates the ultimate “vehicle” for travelling through time. Renowned critics wholeheartedly agree: both James Suckling and Wine Spectator awarded it 96 points, ranking it among the very finest Barolos of the vintage.

The Roagna estate is one of the most historic and iconic names in Piedmont. Its roots stretch back to 1880, when Vincenzo and Rosa Roagna played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of Barbaresco, while in 1929 the family acquired the celebrated Montefico vineyard. Today, the domaine is in the hands of Luca Roagna, who continues the family legacy with an almost obsessive attention to detail. With vineyards in some of the most important crus of both Barbaresco and Barolo, Roagna is regarded as a reference point for those seeking timeless expressions of Nebbiolo.

Barolo Pira 2020 by Roagna comes exclusively from the historic monopole vineyard Pira in Castiglione Falletto, the family’s largest single holding. The Nebbiolo vines, aged 25–50 years (with the oldest plantings dating back to 1937), are farmed using organic practices and low yields. Harvesting is carried out by hand, followed by double sorting and fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large oak botti. Extraction is exceptionally long — around 60–70 days — yet gentle, delivering structure and depth without harsh tannins. The wine then matures for approximately five years in large neutral French botti (steam‑treated, never toasted) and concrete vats, before being released unfiltered.

Barolo Pira 2020 by Roagna is aimed at those who understand that great wines are never rushed — they evolve slowly and reward time and patience generously.

Tastes Like

In the glass, Barolo Pira 2020 by Roagna opens gradually, revealing aromas of dried rose, violet and red cherry, layered with notes of tar, graphite, tea leaves, sweet spices and herbs.

On the palate, it is firm yet refined, with vibrant acidity and dense, finely worked tannins that are perfectly integrated. The red fruit remains bright and precise, while earthy and mineral nuances add depth and complexity.

PAIR IT

Pair it with slow‑braised beef cheeks cooked in wine, game ragù, dishes featuring wild mushrooms or truffle, as well as aged hard cheeses from Piedmont.

Spaghetti with meatballs

  • 1 slice of whole wheat bread, cut into chunks
  • 225 grams of counterfeit
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 portobello mushroom, finely chopped, after removing the stalk
  • 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 3 tbsps. of fresh parsley leaves
  • 1 large egg white
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Fresh grated nutmeg
  • 2 tbsps. of olive oil
  • 700 g peeled tomatoes in juice, hand-melted
  • 120 ml of beef stock
  • 1 bunch of fresh basil
  • 3 sprigs of fresh thyme
  • 225 g spaghetti
  • Parmesan, for serving, optional

Chop the bread into thick breadcrumbs. Place them in a bowl, add minced meat, 3 tablespoons of onion, finely chopped mushroom, 1 tablespoon of garlic, parsley, and egg white. Add salt, pepper and nutmeg. Mix well, until you get a homogeneous mixture. Divide into, approximately,  20 round meatballs and place them on a plate.

Put the pan on moderate heat and heat up some olive oil. Add the rest of the garlic and onion. Cook them for about 10 to 12 minutes by stirring occasionally until they are softened. Mix tomatoes and broth. Add basil and thyme into sprigs so they can be removed afterwards. Let it simmer for 20  minutes, by stirring occasionally. Add the meatballs and simmer, without stirring for about 10 minutes. Turn the meatballs and leave them for another 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the package instructions in salted water. Serve the pasta by adding sauce, meatballs and as much parmesan as you like. Sprinkle with chopped parsley.
