The Birth of Cabernet 2021 by Catena Zapata is one of the finest wines in the world, as recognized by the World’s Best Sommelier’s Selection, and it has received 96 points from James Suckling. Nicolás Catena saw in the microclimate of the Angélica vineyard in the Uco Valley the perfect opportunity for the birth of a great Cabernet — and he was absolutely right. This wine is crafted to evoke profound emotions, a harmonious blend of generosity and ethereal qualities, with notes of fruit and spice.
Catena is the most influential winery in Argentina, shaping not only the country’s wine culture but also its global reputation. It was Catena that placed Argentina firmly on the world wine map — and in a position of prestige. They pioneered “heroic viticulture” at high altitudes above 1,000 meters, revealing the extraordinary potential of both Malbec and Argentina itself. With wines that consistently sweep top scores across all price tiers, and with the super‑influential Laura Catena now at the helm, Catena Zapata stands among the most admired wine brands in the world.
Because nothing at Catena is left to chance, the label of Birth of Cabernet is not only a work of art but also a masterful retelling of the variety’s origin from Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. The fox — Cardinal Richelieu of Château Richelieu, who is said to have brought Cabernet Franc vines to the Loire — represents Cabernet Franc, while the seductive siren, half‑woman and half‑bird, embodies Sauvignon Blanc. The label hides clever symbolic details. For example, in the lower right corner, a small fox with blue feathers — the offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc — holds beneath its hat a card showing the DNA sequence of Cabernet Sauvignon. And of course, the artistry continues inside the bottle. The blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc from the Angélica vineyard at 1,100 meters. Fermentation takes place in a combination of concrete eggs, stainless steel, and oak vats, followed by 18–24 months of aging in French oak barrels (first, second, and third use). The result is worth every cent and every moment of patience from vineyard to bottle.
