In other news, we have Clos Lojen Bobal Bodegas Ponce 2020 in our hands and it should be on yours very soon! A red wine with rich juicy cherry aromas that highlights the deliciousness of the Bobal variety and justifies all those who wanted to vinify it separately!
And to be precise by saying ‘all’, we mean Juan Antonio Ponce (yes if the name sounds familiar to you, he was Telmo Rodriguez's right-hand man), who from the age of 23 and as a young winemaker, was ambitious and passionate about highlighting this rare Spanish variety. Bobal originates from Utiel-Requena located in the south-east of Spain and while it was cultivated in large areas, most were used in blends with other grapes. The first to deal with its monovarietal vinification was Juan, who believed that it would perfectly highlight the terroir of Manchuela, and of course, it did! With wines of mild interventions, biodynamic cultivation, and a natural approach to the vine and integration. We owe him a lot because a red wine with such a strong cherry character, fine tannins, and chocolatey aftertaste is hard to find!
For Clos Lojen Bobal 2020, the grapes come from vines almost 30-50 years old, at an altitude of 800 meters. The harvest is done manually and whole bunches are pressed in traditional open presses, while they are fermented with indigenous yeasts and controlled extraction, in French oak barrels with a capacity of 1,500 to 4,000 kg. The wine remains for another 7 months in French oak barrels, while it is bottled fruity, complex, and unfiltered, simply to get the best scores from wine critics and bring a gem to your table!
Clos Lojen Bobal Bodegas Ponce is much bigger than its price and is ready to drink now or within the next 5 years.
