La Bruja de Rozas Comando G, like all Comando G wines, consistently achieves exceptionally high scores annually due to its exceptional uniqueness and remarkable finesse. For the 2021 La Bruja de Rozas Comando G, we have, on the one hand, a score of 95 points from Robert Parker, and on the other, a wine that exudes such profound fruit expression and ethereal beauty that it easily surpasses Burgundies that cost twice as much!
How incredibly cool can these guys be to name their project Comando G* (in Greece, it was known as Team G), after the name of their childhood favourite cartoon? In their case, the G symbolises Garnacha and the granitic soil that represents the region. And how cool (or perhaps crazy) do they have to be to choose to work with the old, almost abandoned vineyards of an area (Sierra de Gredos) with elevations ranging from 900 to 1200 meters? Furthermore, they ventured into an area that was overlooked and lacked the allure of other renowned regions like Rioja and Priorat. Well, they were so cool that they established their own signature style Garnacha and inspired others to follow their remarkable example. Sierra de Gredos, a once-overlooked region, has transformed into a premier showcase of exceptional quality wines that command high prices and dominate wine rankings. And it all began with two passionate guys who dared to deviate from the norm and of course, Comando G (both and the cartoon and the project).
The Comando G* project was started by two friends, Fernando García and Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi. Both were working in wineries around Madrid when in 2008 they decided that someone should give the old, almost abandoned Garnacha vineyards, on the difficult slopes of the Gredos region, the importance they deserved. This region spreads over 3 different regions: Madrid, Castilla La Mancha, and Castilla Y León.
For La Bruja de Rozas Comando G, the grapes come from Rozas de Puerto Real, Madrid. The 50-80 year old vines grow at an altitude of 850 meters, on granite soil. The harvest is done by hand and, inspired by Burgundy, for the fermentation they used whole bunches of Garnacha. Thus, a gentle extraction of tannins occurs and the complexity and expressiveness of the fruit is enhanced. Fermentation is done with indigenous yeasts and then the wine matures in oak tanks (1500 and 6000 liters) for 9 months. It is bottled unfiltered and with minimal additional interventions (otherwise what kind of commando would it be?).
La Bruja de Rozas Comando G is a wine of shocking finesse that cannot fail to impress you!
*Comando G was an old cartoon with 5 child heroes who saved the world. For the old-timers, in Greece it was called Team G.
