Limnio 2023 from Domaine Kikones is a single‑varietal red creation that dazzles with its elegance. It comes from the most ancient Greek variety, referenced by Homer, Hesiod, and Aristotle, here vinified with remarkable mastery by the experienced oenologist Melina Tassou. The result is a true hymn to the region and the grape!
Kikones Winery, the first in the prefecture of Rhodope, was founded in 2004 and owns 100 acres of organic vineyards in Maroneia. The area, with its red clay‑loam soil and the influence of the Thracian Sea, offers ideal conditions for cultivating Greece’s oldest grape variety, Limnio. This variety, originating from Lemnos and known locally as “Kalampaki,” was mentioned by Aristotle and Herodotus, while Hippocrates praised its beneficial properties.
The vinification of Limnio 2023 at Domaine Kikones involves whole‑berry fermentation to capture the most delicate and aromatic expression of the grape. The wine then matures for 12 months in French oak barrels and is bottled unfiltered, intended either for aging over the next 5–7 years or for immediate enjoyment.
