Why do we love it?

Every bottle of Marqués de Murrieta Rioja 2021 captures the art of balance: between tradition and freshness, elegance and power, the past and the future of Rioja. It doesn’t aim to impress with extravagance, but rather with consistency, depth, and authenticity. The 2021 vintage received an impressive 95 points from Tim Atkin MW, confirming its outstanding quality.

Founded in 1852, Marqués de Murrieta is a cornerstone of Rioja’s winemaking heritage. Inspired by the great châteaux of Bordeaux, Luciano de Murrieta was the first to introduce oak barrel aging in the region—shaping a style that would become timeless.

Marqués de Murrieta Rioja 2021 is sourced from the estate’s own Ygay vineyards, located at 320–485 meters above sea level. The blend includes Tempranillo (82%), Graciano (8%), Mazuelo (7%), and Garnacha (3%). Each variety is vinified separately and aged for 21 months in American oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging to enhance complexity and depth.

This is a wine that proves Rioja can be both classic and contemporary. Discover a value-for-money gem from one of Spain’s legendary wineries.

Marqués de Murrieta
Marqués de Murrieta Winery, founded in 1852 by Don Luciano Murrieta, was among the first Rioja houses to apply Bordeaux winemaking techniques and lead quality production as well as exports (including early shipments to Cuba and Mexico) . Its landmark estate, Castillo de Ygay, is now a museum (since 2019), and new state‑of‑the‑art production facilities were added next to it in 2021. The 300‑hectare vineyards thrive on calcareous‑clay soils at 320–485 m elevation, with hand‑harvesting practices in place. Since 1983, the Cebrián‑Sagarriga family has led the winery, blending tradition with innovation. In addition to its renowned red Riojas, the winery produces the white Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial 1986, Spain’s first white wine awarded 100 Parker points.

PAIR IT

Pair it with: Grilled lamb chops, Beef tenderloin with mushroom sauce, BBQ bacon cheeseburgers

Beef stew with red wine

  • 1 kg of boneless beef cut into bits
  • 4 tbsps. flour
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 2 tbsps. olive oil
  • 1 cup of dry red wine
  • 1 cube beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp. dry thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 pack of small fresh mushrooms, whole
  • baby carrots
  • salt
  • pepper

Wipe the meat with kitchen paper to absorb excess moisture. Stir in a bowl 3 tablespoons of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, paprika and pepper and sprinkle the meat with the flour mixture.

Sautee the meat in hot olive oil in moderate to strong heat, stirring frequently,  for 4-6 minutes or until it acquires a golden brown color. Remove the meat from the pot. Add the red wine, stirring well to incorporate with the meat residues from the bottom of the pot.

Put the meat back in the pot and add the broth, thyme, bay leaf, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Once it starts boiling, cover the pot, lower the heat in half and allow the meat to cook for about an hour, stirring occasionally. You can accompany your meat with wild rice.
