If you were to pour Mega Spileo Estate Pinot Noir into your glass blind, without knowing what wine it was, its ripe strawberry aromas, vanilla notes, and smoky character would easily take you to California’s Russian River Valley. Yet, once you taste it, its razor-sharp acidity and lace-like tannins will take you straight back to the Pinot Noirs of the Old World. We can confidently say that this is the most impressive example of the variety from Greek soil that we have tasted recently.
The story of Mega Spileo Estate began centuries ago on the steep slopes surrounding the Vouraikos Gorge, under the shadow of the historic Monastery of Mega Spileo. Viticulture in this remarkable landscape has deep roots, with evidence confirming vineyard cultivation as early as the 16th century. This unique wine-growing region, which shaped the character of local wines for generations, entered a new era in 1999 when the historic vineyard was revitalized through modern viticultural practices and a philosophy firmly focused on quality. Today, the estate continues to make the most of the exceptional mountainous terroir of Kalavryta, constantly experimenting with single-plot micro-vinifications to showcase the area's distinctive microclimate and immense potential.
Mega Spileo Estate Pinot Noir comes from high-altitude vineyards in the Kalavryta region, reaching elevations of up to 1,000 metres. The altitude and cool nighttime temperatures emphasise the elegance of the variety, allowing it to express its true character. The wine is crafted with meticulous attention to detail and matured for 18 months in French oak, resulting in a Pinot Noir that effortlessly brings together vibrant fruit, mountain freshness, refined elegance and the generous spirit of its Greek origins
