Back in the days of the monks, the estate we now know as Nittardi was called Nectar Dei. So when the winery created its flagship Super Tuscan, there could be only one name for it. And truthfully, after tasting Nectar Dei 2019 Fattoria Nittardi, you'll understand why. Rich, powerful and irresistibly complex, it feels like a wine worthy of its legendary name, the very nectar said to grant strength, youth and immortality to the gods. With remarkable concentration, layers of dark fruit and exceptional finesse, it is the kind of wine you never want to end. It's no surprise that James Suckling awarded it 94 points.
The story of Nittardi dates back to 1183, making it one of Tuscany's true historic treasures. During the 16th century, the estate belonged to none other than Michelangelo Buonarroti, who famously sent his wines as gifts to the Pope while painting the Sistine Chapel. Remarkably, this tradition continues today. In 1982, the property was acquired by Peter Femfert and Stefania Canali, whose dedication and vision restored the estate to its former glory. What has remained unchanged throughout the centuries is Nittardi's deep connection to art, reflected in the striking labels that adorn each wine.
Nectar Dei Nittardi 2019 is sourced from vineyards in Maremma, southwestern Tuscany, just 8 kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea and situated at an altitude of 250 metres. The grapes come from organically farmed vineyards, and the blend is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Syrah. The wine spends 24 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new, followed by four months in concrete tanks before bottling. It is then aged for a further 12 months in bottle before release, ensuring it arrives on the market in perfect condition.
A truly aristocratic Super Tuscan, Nectar Dei Nittardi 2019 is already magnificent today, yet it possesses all the structure and depth required for long-term cellaring. With time, it will continue to gain even greater complexity and refinement.
