Dominio de Anza Selección de Parcelas 2022 is an incredibly elegant red wine that tells the story of the old vines of Bierzo. Its creator, Diego Magaña, after apprenticing under the famous Raúl Pérez, has now managed to surpass his “mentor” and with this humble cuvée, comfortably scored 94 points from the RP Wine Advocate.
Coming from the winemaking Magaña family in Navarra, Diego chose to follow a more personal and independent path. Studying under Raúl Pérez—one of the most iconic winemakers of Bierzo and Spain as a whole—Diego developed a philosophy that blends tradition with innovation, technique with emotion.
Dominio de Anza Selección de Parcelas 2022 comes from a field blend of old vines, over 80 years old, planted at an altitude of around 540 meters, in an area with highly diverse soils—clay, slate, pebbles—and varying sun exposures. Diego treats each plot of the vineyard as a distinct entity, vinifying it separately to highlight the character of the terroir. The dominant grape variety is Mencía, with small amounts of Bastardo (Trousseau) and Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) included in the blend.
Vinification is carried out with absolute respect for the raw material. Fermentation takes place in large oak vats, with indigenous yeasts and a small percentage of whole clusters, to preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. The wine is aged for 12 months in large used French barrels, allowing it to evolve without being overshadowed by oak aromas.
Dominio de Anza Selección de Parcelas 2022 is a wine worth revisiting again and again. Start today!
