Why do we love it?

There are wines that, from the very first sip, remind you just how important terroir and the hand of the grower are. This Charming Man Old Vine Single Vineyard Grenache Rouge 2023 by Thistledown is one of them. It channels the power of McLaren Vale through its dense red fruit core, refined spice aromas, and velvety texture. This is a world-class Grenache, seductive, elegant, and unmistakably deserving 96 points by Robert Parker and James Suckling!

Thistledown Wine Co., founded in 2010 by two passionate Brits with no formal winemaking background, has redefined how the world sees Australian wine. By seeking out and elevating some of the country’s most exceptional vineyards, from McLaren Vale to Barossa and the Adelaide Hills, they’ve earned their place among the finest. One of their standout sites lies in Clarendon, where the Smart family has farmed dry-grown bush vines for three generations. Bernard Smart, preserved these 100-year-old vines at a time when few valued the variety. Through unwavering dedication, he helped shape one of the region's purest and most graceful expressions of Grenache.

This wine comes from a unique block within that vineyard, slightly elevated to allow for better airflow and enhanced sunlight exposure, perfect for preserving the richness of aroma and achieving flawless balance. Grapes are hand-harvested with care. Fermentation is done with 20% whole bunches in open fermenters, followed by aging in large oak barrels, 20% of which are new. Every step, from vine to bottle, is carried out with reverence for the fruit and a clear vision of letting Grenache speak for itself.

This Charming Man Old Vine Single Vineyard, vintage 2023, has special meaning because it was the last vintage in which Bernard participated (he is also visible on the label!) and was named so to honor the charming "Baron of Grenache".

Don't miss it!

Tastes Like

On the nose, it reveals a rich bouquet of black fruits, ripe blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, vanilla, and dark plum laced with delicate violet, subtle graphite, and lifted by hints of warm spices like nutmeg, allspice, and a touch of white pepper.

On the palate, it’s full-bodied and structured, with plush, silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that brings freshness and balance. The black cherry and plum fruit is juicy and persistent, while earthy undertones, spice, and a gentle hint of anise carry through to a long, savory finish.

PAIR IT

Pair it with herb-crusted lamb chops, slow-cooked wild boar with prunes, grilled beef tagliata, or a wild mushroom risotto with truffle oil

Roast beef with spices and red wine sauce

  • 2 tbsps. of peppercorns
  • 2 tbsps. of black or white mustard seeds
  • 2 tbsps. of fennel seeds
  • 1.5 kilos of beef fillet
  • 2 tbsps extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp of wholegrain or English (preferably gluten-free) mustard
  • 3 coarsely chopped red onions along with the peels
  • A pinch of thyme

For the sauce:

  • 2 tbsps extra virgin olive oil
  • 1.5 with 2 tsps of corn flour
  • 2 beef stock cubes
  • 3-4 tbsp red currant jelly
  • 400ml red wine

Two days ago, grind the pepper and the mustard and fennel seeds using a mortar. Brush the fillet with mustard and then roll it to freshly ground pepper. Cover with cling film and place it in the fridge.

Two hours before you start cooking, take the meat out of the refrigerator to reach room temperature.

Preheat the oven to 180C. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and cook the meat until it gets a beautiful brown color. Use onions in the casserole as the base and place the meat on top of them. Bake for 20 minutes for medium or 35 minutes for a well-done beef.

Remove the beef from the casserole and place it on a platter covered with foil for 30 minutes to keep it warm. Put the casserole on the heat and along with the onions and meat juices, add the corn flour and the beef stock cubes. Stir the jelly and gradually pour the wine while stirring. Simmer until the liquid is reduced. Strain the sauce and remove the onions. Slice the beef, flavor it with thyme and serve with the red wine sauce.
