The Reine No.1 Extra Brut Reserve from No.1 Family Estate is a sparkling wine – a tribute to the family’s mother and Mémère, Reine Vautrelle Le Brun – that redefines the tradition of Champagne through the terroir of Marlborough and highlights the strength of the French varieties, using the authentic méthode champenoise!

No.1 Family Estate was founded in 1997 by Daniel Le Brun, a member of the historic Le Brun family of Champagne, who continues a family tradition of 12 generations that began in 1684. In 1985 he decided to bring Champagne expertise to New Zealand, where after many years of experiments and trials, he managed both to adapt the varieties to his own standards for such production and to earn the nickname “father” of Méthode Traditionnelle or “the crazy Frenchman” of the region! The result was that the family extended its legacy beyond France, and New Zealand has now acquired remarkable sparkling wines that have even gained international recognition.

The Reine No.1 Extra Brut Reserve is composed of 50% Chardonnay, 43% Pinot Noir, and 7% Pinot Meunier, and strictly follows the Champagne winemaking method. The Chardonnay brings vibrancy and citrus notes, the Pinot Noir provides body and aromatic intensity, while the Pinot Meunier completes the blend with juicy fruit and a rounded character. Its ageing on lees for more than 4 years imparts a creamy texture and highly enjoyable complexity!

Tastes Like

The Reine No.1 Extra Brut Reserve on the nose reveals seductive aromas of lemon, white flowers, citron, lemon zest, pear, buttery shortbread, apple tart, and ripe apricot.

On the palate it shows medium (+) body, refreshing acidity, and a delightful creamy texture. Flavors of lemon, lime, baked peach, and ripe apricot are enriched with notes of butter, bread, and freshly baked brioche.

Enjoy it with vegetable tarts, sautéed mushrooms, fish carpaccio, shrimp tempura, chips or Comté cheese.

Shrimps with peas and ginger

  • 3 tbsps. of olive oil
  • 300 grams of mushrooms cut into four
  • 1/3 cup of peas
  • 8 large shrimps peeled
  • 1 tsp. grated ginger
  • 3 tbsps. of soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp. vinegar of white wine

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a pan, on high heat. Add the mushrooms and let them soften by stirring, about 5 minutes. Remove them from the pan and put them on an absorbent paper.

Add the peas to the pan and cook by stirring for about 2 minutes. Remove them from the pan and put them along with the mushrooms on the absorbent paper.

Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the pan. Then put the shrimps and chopped ginger in the pan. Reduce the heat to moderate and cook until the shrimp becomes opaque, about 4 minutes.

Return all vegetables to the pan, add soy sauce and white wine vinegar. Cook until they are warm enough, about 4 minutes.
