Xinomavro Extra Brut Markovitis is the newest release from the renowned producer of Naoussa. This time, Markos Markovitis chose to explore the world of sparkling wine—and the result is spot on. Made from 100% Xinomavro, it combines the structure and intensity of the variety with the freshness and finesse of a serious traditional‑method sparkling wine.
After completing his oenology studies in Germany, Markos Markovitis returned to Naoussa to take over the historic family winery, bringing with him a clear personal vision. In order to create the wines he truly believed in, he decided on the gradual replanting of the estate’s single, 140‑acre vineyard, originally planted in 1972 by his grandfather. All other varieties were removed so that today the vineyard is planted exclusively with Xinomavro.
Xinomavro Extra Brut Markovitis comes from the youngest vines, located in the coolest part of this vineyard. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, as with all the wines of the estate, followed by bottling and a second fermentation in bottle. After the completion of the second fermentation, the wine remains on its lees for 26 months, developing aromatic complexity and a beautifully velvety texture.
Although this is the winery’s first attempt at producing a sparkling wine, it clearly shows that Markos Markovitis has both the talent and the raw material to succeed in this demanding style. Production is extremely limited, making this a bottle not to be missed.
