Monemvasia is a place with great history. The castle is there to remind it. Equally important, the wine history of the region goes back to the 12th until the 15th century AC when its wine was the best known wine in worldwide. The Malvasia (Monemvasia in Frankish) had conquered the known world becoming the main exportable product of Greece during that era.
Purveyor to the revival of Monemvasia wine, George Tsimpidis began his quest in 1997 cultivating solely Greek varieties in his privately owned vineyard. The unique location of the vineyard in Malea peninsula, the natural end of Parnon mountain, makes it ideal for viticulture. The sea around it and the mountains in the back, gives the fruit all the time it needs to ripen, providing ideal humidity and temperature conditions.
In Akra Minoa 2015 by Monemvasia Winery, Malagouzia, Monemvasia and Asproudi mingle in a blend full of exemplary simplicity and summer lightness. A blend that smells carelessness, and seems ideal to cool hot summer evenings.
The Malagouzia brings in the flowers and the tropical fruit, the rising Monemvasia (which despite its name indicating its origin, it is mainly cultivated in Paros) adds citrus and volume, while Asproudi adds its delicate nature and the refreshing sensation of acidity that makes the wine refreshing.
If you have not yet decided on the wine to accompany your summer, with its many international distinctions, Akra Minoa 2015 from Monemvasia Winery is a very serious candidate.
