Chardonnay “La Marquette” 2023 from Domaine de la Borde is a refined yet striking and gastronomic white wine from Jura, crafted by the talented winemaker Julien Mareschal. The region’s distinctive microclimate and Julien’s gentle, minimal-intervention natural winemaking result in a wine of character and intensity that’s not to be missed.
Julien Mareschal is a gifted winemaker who started from scratch, without inherited vineyards or family land. After studying agronomy and oenology, and gaining experience in wineries across the globe, he settled in Pupillin in 2003, drawn by the area’s unique climate and soils. His estate, Domaine de la Borde, is now one of the most sought-after small wineries in Jura. His vineyards reach up to 550 metres in altitude and are planted with varieties such as Ploussard, Trousseau, Chardonnay, Savagnin, and rarities like Enfariné and Petit Béclan. Farming is organic, with biodynamic practices, manual harvesting, and fermentation using ambient yeasts. His wines are bottled with little or no added sulphites, preserving their authenticity and the character of the terroir.
One such wine is Chardonnay “La Marquette” 2023. It comes from a vineyard planted on red clay-rich marl soils, a distinctive terroir that lends depth and minerality to the wine. It was fermented and aged for 12 months in large oak casks and sandstone amphorae, gaining earthy and spicy complexity along with a beautifully textured mouthfeel.
This is a wine that won’t be around for long—so you know what to do.
