Why do we love it?

The Chocolate Block by Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa’s most distinctive and recognisable red wines, with the 2020 vintage was awarded 93pts from Decanter!

The Boekenhoutskloof estate dates back to 1776, although its modern history began in 1993, following its sale and subsequent replanting. Today, it is one of South Africa’s leading representatives and a benchmark producer for Syrah, with The Chocolate Block becoming a true international success.

Inspired by the Rhône and Priorat, the winemaking team created a Syrah-led blend using grapes from Swartland, home to some of South Africa’s oldest vineyards. Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and a touch of Viognier come together and age for 12–14 months, primarily in seasoned French oak barrels. The oak adds complexity while allowing the wine’s juicy fruit to remain firmly at the forefront.

Tastes Like

The nose is wonderfully complex, revealing aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum, violet, olive, pepper, chocolate, bacon, smoke and sweet spice.

On the palate, it is rich and generous, with lively acidity bringing freshness and fine-grained, velvety tannins wrapped in juicy, ripe fruit. A touch of spice lingers on the finish, adding further character.

PAIR IT

Pair it with smoky brisket or a pulled-pork burger with BBQ sauce for a match made for bold, flavour-packed dishes.

Wild boar casserole with tagliatelle pasta

  • 1 kilogram of wild boar
  • 1 carrot coarsely chopped
  • 1 celery coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 bunch of fresh onions finely chopped
  • 1/2 bunch of parsley finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 3 tbsps. of mustard
  • 3 tbsps. of lemon juice
  • 5 allspice berries
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper
  • 200 g olive oil
  • 250 ml red wine (preferably xinomavro)
  • 500 g of tagliatelle

Cut the wild boar in portions. Put all the ingredients in a bowl, except olive oil and pasta. Marinate for at least 12 hours.

When we are ready for cooking, remove the boar from the marinade, drain it to leave the many liquids and sauté with the oil until it gets golden-brown. Add the marinade and lower the heat to simmer for 30 minutes.

Transfer them all to the casserole and put it in a preheated oven, at 150 ° C. Stir regularly to keep liquids from sticking. If more liquids are needed, add some vegetable broth.

Boil the pasta according to the instructions (preferably al dente).

Garnish with a little chopped parsley over the plate.
