The label was inspired by a graffiti. The first graffiti in Santorini Akrotiri. Grandfather Iakovos (1926-2010) cultivated his small vineyard at Dascali, in the southwest cape of the volcanic land of Santorini. It was his escape and the small room built in it was his refuge. There he kept the barrels with the brusque as he used to call it wine that he made, and spent the evening playing accordion and singing. Partly Mantilaria, partly Voudomato but mostly Assyrtiko, entered the old barrels always hoping for the best.
One year, returning from Athens, he finds the building open and empty. Someone had stolen the barrels with the brusque. Illiterate as he was, he created the first graffiti in the area. MI KlEVETE THA dIKASTITE EPANO he wrote.
In 2008 he made wine for the last time.
His grandson Iakovos and Tzannes (Yiannis Nomikos) started cultivating the small vineyard with the advice of local winegrowers, emphasizing on the roots of Assyrtiko which now were more than 100 years old. The magician Charidimos Hatzidakis was in charge of vinification. With minimum yield, the harvest of 2014 from the 10 acre vineyard gave forcibly 1306 bottles. They were released just before summer. We uncorked one.
Dascali 2014 is the most expressive version of the unique terroir, not only of Santorini, but of Dascali, the Akrotiri at the southwest tip of the island. They put the arrow and his grandfathers handwrite on the label. In the bottle they sealed his love for his vineyard and the land of Dascali.
Enjoy the wild land of Santorini.
