Gitane Malagouzia – Akriotou Microwinery is not just another Malagouzia. It is more gastronomic, more layered and distinctly richer in character, thanks to its partial maturation in amphora. Its name, Gitane (Gypsy), is anything but accidental. It perfectly conveys the idea of a wine that refuses to be tied to a single place, choosing instead to travel in search of its own “homeland” — a philosophy that mirrors this Malagouzia with striking accuracy. Read on, and you will see why.
Behind Gitane Malagouzia – Akriotou Microwinery stands Akriotou Microwinery, a name that has become synonymous with thoughtfully crafted, character-driven wines. At the heart of the estate is winemaker and oenologist Vasiliki Akriotou, whose philosophy is crystal clear: low yields, meticulous vineyard selection and minimal intervention in the cellar, so that every wine truly reflects its grape variety and origin. Working on a small scale in Central Greece, Akriotou Microwinery focuses on precision rather than volume, allowing terroir and vintage conditions to speak with clarity and authenticity.
Gitane Malagouzia – Akriotou Microwinery is a textbook example of this approach. Each vintage, the grapes are sourced from different carefully selected vineyards across Central Greece, always from plots with low yields. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatic purity, followed by approximately four months of ageing on fine lees. This maturation occurs in stainless steel tanks, with around 30% of the wine ageing in amphora. The result is a wine of greater texture, depth and complexity, where the amphora enhances mouthfeel and savoury nuance without overshadowing the varietal expression.
