If you love acidity and want to get away from Assyrtiko and Riesling, then Kliprug Chenin Blanc - Kaapzicht from South Africa will surely excite you. We wanted for a long time to find a Chenin Blanc that expresses the typicality of the variety, but in its most neocosmic version. It has aromatic purity, it is fresh and we managed to secure only a few bottles!
Kaapzicht winery is located in South Africa's most famous wine region, Stellenbosch. In 1946, David Steytler, a major in the Second World War, decided to resign and become a viticulturist! A year later he planted the first Chenin Blanc vines, which today are among the oldest in South Africa. The winery now operates with the 4th generation at the helm and Danie Jnr carrying on the tradition. The Kliprun vineyard, planted in 1982 on wild rocky soils, belongs to the rare Old Vines category of South Africa, which includes a total of only 10 vineyards and strictly concerns vines aged 35 years or more.
Kliprug Chenin Blanc - Kaapzicht, comes from mild pressure juice fermented for 2-4 weeks in barrels. It was aged there for 10 months before bottling, acquiring a slightly oily feel and velvety texture, but retaining the freshness of the fruit. These were the reasons why it was awarded 92pts by Tim Atkin.
You will enjoy it now and in the next 3 years!
