Astrolabe Kēkerengū Coast is a Sauvignon Blanc with unmistakably New Zealand DNA, yet shaped by a more “European” sensibility. With a less overt aromatic profile but greater texture, structure, and complexity, it explores a different side of the variety—one that still preserves all the charm you love in the wines of the estate and of Marlborough.
There’s little that needs to be said about Astrolabe, since the winery’s signature Sauvignon Blanc (yes, the one with the green label) is one of Botilia’s best sellers. It’s worth noting, however, that the man behind Astrolabe, Simon Waghorn—who has over 40 years of experience in wine—had a clear vision for the style he wanted to achieve and how to bring it to life. The result speaks for itself: both consumers and critics reward him year after year with consistently high scores (the wine has even appeared in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list).
Kēkerengū Coast lies on the southern edge of Marlborough, where the proximity to the sea creates a unique, cooler microclimate that allows for a longer ripening period. Combined with the limestone soils—found nowhere else in Marlborough—this terroir contributes to a more refined, citrus‑driven character with crystalline purity, setting Astrolabe Kēkerengū Coast apart from the rest of the winery’s range.
In the winery, two different vinification methods are used for Astrolabe Kēkerengū Coast. One portion is destemmed, pressed, and fermented in stainless steel at low temperatures, with neutral yeasts, to preserve the intensity and purity of the variety. A smaller portion is whole‑bunch pressed and fermented in barrels with indigenous yeasts to build additional structure and complexity.
