Why do we love it?

It’s here — and it’s the best Albariño we’ve ever tasted! Gran Vino Albariño Pazo de Barrantes 2021 has just landed in our cellar, and something tells us it won’t be staying long. With limited bottles available and sky-high ratings (96 pts from Tim Atkin MW, 94 pts from James Suckling, and Robert Parker), this wine is expected to sell out at lightning speed.

Pazo de Barrantes, owned by the Creixell family (of Marqués de Murrieta fame), is a historic estate dating back to 1511. Nestled in the heart of Rías Baixas, in the Salnés Valley, it’s one of the largest single vineyards in the region. After a decade of research and experimentation, 2019 marked the beginning of a new era: the creation of Gran Vino Albariño Pazo de Barrantes, a wine designed to showcase the full potential of Albariño and the unique terroir that gives it life.

The grapes for Gran Vino Albariño Pazo de Barrantes 2021 come exclusively from the estate’s 12 hectares, divided into 8 distinct plots surrounding the winery. The vines average 35 years of age. Fermentation takes place at low temperatures. 15% of the wine is aged for 7 months in acacia wood barrels, while the rest remains on its lees in stainless steel tanks. It then spends nearly two years aging in the bottle, gaining complexity and depth.

If you love wines with dense stone fruits, minerality, complexity, and a full, textured palate — this one will speak to your soul.

GRAN VINO ALBARIÑO PAZO DE BARRANTES 2021 - MARQUÉS DE MURRIETA

PAIR IT

with tuna tartare, lemon-parmesan risotto, or butter-poached langoustines.

Chicken Piccata

  • 2 chicken fillets (breast or thigh)
  • 3 tbsps. of butter
  • 3 juicy lemons
  • 150 ml. white wine (preferably Sauvignon blanc or Assyrtiko)
  • 150 ml. chicken broth, hot
  • 1 bunch of parsley
  • Olive oil
  • Flour for all purposes
  • Capers
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground pepper

First mush up, in a mortar, a pinch of salt, a few peppercorns, some lemon zest and 1 1/ tablespoon of olive oil.

Cut the fillets along with a sharp knife, creating 2 slices of each breast.

Brush the fillets with the mortar mixture by lightly massage the chicken and then flour the fillets.

In a large pan add 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. When they heat up, we sauté the chicken until it gets a nice golden color and we remove it from the pan.

In the same pan add the broth and the wine. Allow to boil and then put the fillets back into the pan.

Leave it to high heat until the sauce begins to thicken slightly.  As long as the sauce cools, it will thicken even more, so do not let the whole sauce evaporate.

Add 1 tablespoon of butter, the lemon juice from the two lemons and a few slices of lemon, shake the pan and add the capers.

Remove it from the fire, add chopped parsley and serve with thin pasta, rice or boiled potatoes!
