Why do we love it?

If there is one Albariño that can look the world’s great white wines straight in the eye, it is La Comtesse de Pazo Barrantes 2019. Its limited production and exceptional ratings—96 points from James Suckling and Robert Parker, and an impressive 97 points from Tim Atkin MW—have turned La Comtesse de Pazo Barrantes 2019 into a true legend. Taste it and you’ll understand why… but act fast, this icon won’t be around for long!

Pazo Barrantes, owned by the Creixell family (Marqués de Murrieta), is a historic estate whose story began in 1511. Located in the heart of Rías Baixas, in the Salnés Valley (just a step away from the Atlantic), it is one of the largest single vineyards in the region. In 2009, La Comtesse de Pazo Barrantes was born with the aim of showcasing a more structured side of the variety—one that has all the credentials to age and evolve over time.

The grapes for La Comtesse de Pazo Barrantes 2019 come from the Pago Cacheiro vineyard, a single 1.4-hectare plot, planted in 1965. The wine ferments in oak vats and then matures for 12 months in 3,000-liter oak vats (with 3 months on the lees) and another 18 months in concrete tanks.

If you crave wines with a generous body, razor-sharp acidity, and a distinctive saline edge—wines that remain youthful and vibrant even after six years—then La Comtesse de Pazo Barrantes 2019 will speak straight to your soul.

Tastes Like

La Comtesse de Pazo Barrantes 2019 bursts with elegant aromas of sweet lemon, peach, brioche, bay leaf, saffron, and grapefruit. Notes of salinity and wet stone complete the picture.

On the palate, it offers a full body, creamy texture, and zesty acidity. Juicy citrus fruits, pineapple, and apricot washed by the sea make every sip unforgettable.

Marqués de Murrieta
Marqués de Murrieta Winery, founded in 1852 by Don Luciano Murrieta, was among the first Rioja houses to apply Bordeaux winemaking techniques and lead quality production as well as exports (including early shipments to Cuba and Mexico) . Its landmark estate, Castillo de Ygay, is now a museum (since 2019), and new state‑of‑the‑art production facilities were added next to it in 2021. The 300‑hectare vineyards thrive on calcareous‑clay soils at 320–485 m elevation, with hand‑harvesting practices in place. Since 1983, the Cebrián‑Sagarriga family has led the winery, blending tradition with innovation. In addition to its renowned red Riojas, the winery produces the white Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial 1986, Spain’s first white wine awarded 100 Parker points.

PAIR IT

Pair it with sautéed scallops with lemon and jamón ibérico powder, monkfish fillet with butter sauce and caviar, or ravioli stuffed with chanterelles and goat cheese.

Chicken Piccata

  • 2 chicken fillets (breast or thigh)
  • 3 tbsps. of butter
  • 3 juicy lemons
  • 150 ml. white wine (preferably Sauvignon blanc or Assyrtiko)
  • 150 ml. chicken broth, hot
  • 1 bunch of parsley
  • Olive oil
  • Flour for all purposes
  • Capers
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground pepper

First mush up, in a mortar, a pinch of salt, a few peppercorns, some lemon zest and 1 1/ tablespoon of olive oil.

Cut the fillets along with a sharp knife, creating 2 slices of each breast.

Brush the fillets with the mortar mixture by lightly massage the chicken and then flour the fillets.

In a large pan add 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. When they heat up, we sauté the chicken until it gets a nice golden color and we remove it from the pan.

In the same pan add the broth and the wine. Allow to boil and then put the fillets back into the pan.

Leave it to high heat until the sauce begins to thicken slightly.  As long as the sauce cools, it will thicken even more, so do not let the whole sauce evaporate.

Add 1 tablespoon of butter, the lemon juice from the two lemons and a few slices of lemon, shake the pan and add the capers.

Remove it from the fire, add chopped parsley and serve with thin pasta, rice or boiled potatoes!
