If you love fresh, fruity, floral white wines with vibrant acidity, then you need to try the Reto Albillo Blanco 2020 from Bodega Ponce. This rare Spanish grape will have you wondering why you hadn’t discovered it sooner. Trust us on this one!
In the small and relatively unknown wine region of Manchuela, young winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce left a promising career working alongside Telmo Rodriguez to follow his own path. At just 23, he dedicated himself entirely to reviving native varieties like Bobal, Moravia Agria, and the nearly extinct Albilla de Manchuela (also known as Albillo). The result? Wines with remarkable freshness, character, and depth, think Chenin Blanc style vibrancy, with a Mediterranean twist!
All of Bodega Ponce’s wines are natural and biodynamic, crafted with minimal intervention and a deep respect for the land. They reflect the unique terroir of the region, capturing the wild, honest soul of Spain through forgotten native grapes that are slowly gaining global recognition.
Reto Albillo Blanco 2020 is Juan’s first white wine made entirely from Albillo. The grapes were hand-harvested from old vines aged 40 to 60 years, and then chilled to preserve their freshness. Fermentation followed using the traditional Spanish method known as “remango”, (whole bunch fermentation with stems) adding texture and complexity. The wine was then aged in old barrels for 8 months on its lees, developing a creamy mouthfeel and greater depth.
If you’re looking to experience a bold, balanced, and terroir-driven expression of Spain, Reto Albillo Blanco 2020 is a must-try.
