Why do we love it?

If you’ve tried El Enemigo Chardonnay, then you already know that the rare El Enemigo Semillon is the wine you must have. We managed to secure a limited number of bottles from the 2023 vintage, which was included in James Suckling’s Top 100 Best Value list, scoring 96 points, as well as 94 points from the RP Wine Advocate.

Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolás Catena, together with Alejandro Vigil, chief winemaker of Catena Zapata, decided to create their own winery in Argentina, El Enemigo. There, they experimented with both local and international grape varieties, cultivating vineyards at high altitudes and applying unconventional yet highly successful winemaking techniques. Their wines consistently sweep awards every year (El Enemigo Gualtallary was the first 100-point Parker wine in Argentina), with James Suckling himself being a devoted fan.

So, you can imagine that expectations for this Semillon are high. El Enemigo Semillon 2023 comes from vineyards at 930 meters altitude. The combination of intense sunlight and elevation produces grapes with high acidity and an expressive aromatic profile. The winemaking process then elevates this remarkable Semillon even further, with fermentation using indigenous yeasts in used oak barrels, followed by 15 months of aging in 250L French oak barrels (10% new). Alejandro Vigil’s magic doesn’t stop there, as 35% of the wine is aged under flor*.

El Enemigo Semillon 2023 is a wine as distinctive and complex as the combination of Vigil’s brilliance and the unique characteristics imparted by Argentina’s terroir. If you’re wondering whether you should try it — you’re already late.

*Flor, in case you’re wondering, is a thin layer of yeast that forms on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation. This technique is widely used in Spanish Sherry, giving the wine a distinctive aromatic profile that can evoke fresh almond, brine, mushroom, and dough.

Tastes Like

On the nose, it shows expressive aromas of ripe pear, peach, mandarin, and citrus oils, along with hints of sourdough and dried orange blossom.

On the palate, it has a medium body and high acidity that forms the backbone of the wine, with flavors of peach, apple, pear, toast, hazelnut, honey, dough, and lemon peel, all wrapped in a beautiful saline note that makes it ideal for gastronomic pairings.

The union of the forces of Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolas Catena and Alejandro Vigil, former chief winemaker of the Catena Zapata Winery, created a small wine miracle located in the Mendoza area of Argentina. The El Enemigo winery!

PAIR IT

Pair it with oven-roasted pork belly with five-spice, goat cheese ravioli with mushrooms, lemon and thyme, or fatty grilled fish with pil-pil sauce.

Chicken Piccata

  • 2 chicken fillets (breast or thigh)
  • 3 tbsps. of butter
  • 3 juicy lemons
  • 150 ml. white wine (preferably Sauvignon blanc or Assyrtiko)
  • 150 ml. chicken broth, hot
  • 1 bunch of parsley
  • Olive oil
  • Flour for all purposes
  • Capers
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground pepper

First mush up, in a mortar, a pinch of salt, a few peppercorns, some lemon zest and 1 1/ tablespoon of olive oil.

Cut the fillets along with a sharp knife, creating 2 slices of each breast.

Brush the fillets with the mortar mixture by lightly massage the chicken and then flour the fillets.

In a large pan add 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. When they heat up, we sauté the chicken until it gets a nice golden color and we remove it from the pan.

In the same pan add the broth and the wine. Allow to boil and then put the fillets back into the pan.

Leave it to high heat until the sauce begins to thicken slightly.  As long as the sauce cools, it will thicken even more, so do not let the whole sauce evaporate.

Add 1 tablespoon of butter, the lemon juice from the two lemons and a few slices of lemon, shake the pan and add the capers.

Remove it from the fire, add chopped parsley and serve with thin pasta, rice or boiled potatoes!
