Albarino Maldonado 2022 by Compañía Uruguaya de Vinos de Mar is a white wine that masterfully brings together the finest qualities of the variety and the unique character of its terroir. Yes, you’re probably used to hearing about Albariño from north-western Spain — but how about a version from Uruguay? Careful now — this “experiment” has been so successful it’s already caught the attention of Jancis Robinson MW and Tim Atkin MW!
The small winery of Compañía Uruguaya de Vinos de Mar is a family-run operation that set out to honour the distinctive soils of its region and show the world that Uruguay deserves a prominent place on the global wine map. With organic farming, biodynamic practices, zero chemical use in the vineyard, and a prime location on coastal hills with granite soils, the conditions are ideal for crafting wines of real character.
Albarino Maldonado 2022 Compañía Uruguaya de Vinos de Mar comes from vineyards located 40 to 200 metres above sea level. Here’s the lowdown: spontaneous fermentation in oak barrels and concrete tanks, followed by 8 months of ageing on the lees in Italian oak barrels.
And just like that, one of the most distinctive and delicious white wines we’ve tasted was born.
It’s light, exotic, and we guarantee it’ll make your summer evenings even more exciting.
